Season wrap up

Hawks Fall in the Regional Championship

The Mohawk Valley Women's Softball team saw great strides made in the program this season. This team improved upon a 12-12 record in 2019 to finish the 2021 campaign with a very respectable 18-7 record, hosting semi-finals and making it to the Regional Championship for the first time in about a decade. When asked about the team's growing success, head coach Brittnee Mexico said, "The theme of this season was thankfulness. After having our 2020 season canceled due to the pandemic, there was a different sense of appreciation for being able to play and coach the game we love. We made a decision to cross every "t" and dot every "i" to ensure our success, and that's exactly what we did. After a tough year, I am proud of what these girls were able to accomplish. They never missed a beat."

The #2 East seeded Mohawk Valley Community College Softball team saw its season come to an end on Sunday. Top-seeded, #1 nationally ranked Corning won the best-of-three Region III A finals at the NJCAA Regional Championship at Corning Community College.

The Red Barons will play for the national championship at the eight-team, double-elimination Division III World Series, to be held May 27-29 at Carrier Park Field of Dreams in Syracuse. MVCC fell one win short as the Hawks wrap up at an 18-7 overall record.

In game one on Friday the Hawks delivered the #1 nationally ranked Red Barons, then 32-0, their first loss of the season with a 3-2 win. Trinity Critelli shut down Corning's bats with 10 strikeouts and only allowed 3 hits in her 7-inning showing. Elana Calicchia had a huge showing at the plate going 2 for 2 with a double and she is credited with all 3 RBIs for the Hawks. Kimberly Birmingham also had a stellar performance at the plate going 2 for 3 with a double and she scored 2 runs.

The Red Barons bounced back with a 9-0, five-inning win in Game 2 later in the day. Joy Stevens had 3 strikeouts. The Hawks took their final loss of the season in game 3 on Saturday May 15th. Kimberly Birmingham went 2 for 3 at the plate with a homerun. She makes history setting the single season HR record with 7.
