2 Hawks crowned National Track and Field Champions

This past weekend, Mohawk Valley Community College hosted the 2023 NJCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Both the Men's and Women's Track and Field teams put in impressive performances, with two athletes taking home national titles.

The College of DuPage (Illinois) claimed the Men's Championship, and Harper College (also from Illinois) won the Women’s Championship.

Keenan Cannon, Taylor Harvey are national champions

On the Men’s Team, MVCC freshman Keenan Cannon placed first in the Men’s Long Jump finals with a leap of 23.6 feet (7.18m). He also placed third in the Men’s Triple Jump finals with 44.9 feet (13.68m) and third in the Men’s High Jump finals with 6.2 feet (1.88m). Keenan also was named to the Honorable Mention Field All-Americans for High Jump and Triple Jump.

On the Women’s Team, MVCC freshman Taylor Harvey placed first in the Women’s 5000 Meter Run finals with a time of 19:19.38. She also placed second in the Women’s 1500 Meter Run finals with a time of 4:53.09. Taylor also was named to the First Team Track All-Americans for the 5000 Meter Run, Second Team Track All-Americans for the 1500 Meter Run. 

MVCC Men’s results

  • The Men’s Team placed 11th overall.
  • Freshman Omar Mohamed placed sixth in the Men’s 1500 Meter Run finals with a time of 4:06.23. He also placed 19th in the Men’s 800 Meter Run preliminaries with a time of 2:13.20.
  • Sophomore Hayden Day placed 19th in the Men’s Long Jump finals with a leap of 5.68m (18-7.75) and 22nd in the Men’s 200 Meter Dash preliminaries with a time of 24.50.
  • Freshman Jimmy Riley placed eighth in the Men’s Javelin Throw finals with a mark of 40.42m (132-7) and 14th in the Men’s Discus Throw finals with a mark of 28.75m (94-4).

MVCC Women’s results

  • The Women’s Team placed 13th overall.
  • MVCC placed fifth in the Women’s 4x100 Meter Relay with a time of 52.75. The team was made up of sophomore Moenae Washington, freshman Olga Akhrenmenko, freshman Toni Brown, and sophomore Iveion Seabrooks. Olga Akhrenmenko also placed 13th in the Women’s 100 Meter Dash preliminaries with a time of 13.65.
