The three-time defending regional champion Mohawk Valley Women's Tennis team started of the 2024 season with a 6-3 victory of Herkimer College on Monday evening. A brand new team this year saw victories in the top four singles flights, as well as first and second doubles. Freshman Marga Villahermosa won in a tie break in the first singles flight and sophomore Victoria Vo won 9-3 in the second singles flight. The two also combined for an 8-2 victory in first doubles. In other singles play, Cailynn Patterson and Amber Piersma both won their singles matches, and also an 8-1 second doubles victory. Freshmen Brooklyn Skellham and Olivia Krouson were both defeated in singles play and also in doubles play.
Later on in the week, the Mohawk Valley Women's Tennis team dropped their first team match in over three seasons as the Hudson Valley Vikings defeated them by a score of 7-2. On a cool, windy, and wet Saturday, the weather forced doubles play to be stopped and the rest of the match to be moved inside the Jorgensen Center fieldhouse. The Vikings won five out of the six singles matches with the Hawks lone singles victory being in fifth singles as newcomer Hannah Pcola defeated CKailea Kewley by a score of 6-0, 6-1. Marga Villahermosa was defeated in second singles after a great comeback to win the second set in a tiebreak and then ultimately lose the third set by a score of 6-1. 6-7 (7-1), 10-5. In doubles play, the Hawks lost first and second doubles, but were victorious in the third doubles flight as the team of Pcola and Amber Piersma defeated Hudson Valley's Kewley and Sidney Phillips by a score of 8-4.
The Hawks are 1-1 on the season and will return to action either this Wednesday or Friday at Hudson Valley depending on the weather. They will wrap up the regular season as they host Herkimer on Wednesday, May 1st, before hosting the regional tournament on Sunday, May 5th.
