Hawks Come Up Just Short in National Title Game

MVCC National Championship Runner-Up

The MVCC Men's Basketball team dropped a 93-89 heartbreaker to Sandhills Community College in the NJCAA Division III National Championship on Friday evening in Rochester, MN.

The Hawks, playing in their first national championship game, led by as many as eight points and battled through an adjusted tournament schedule due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

MV took a 50-47 lead into halftime.  The Hawks built up a six-point lead to open up the second half before Sandhills took a 61-60 lead.

Mohawk Valley's relentless effort from a pair of dynamic scoring performances in Adonis Fishburne and Jordanny Cuevas-Marte regained the lead for the Hawks that held strong until the 2:43 mark of the second half when Sandhills' Savion Staton buried his second consecutive three in just over a minute span. Dent added a late jumper and the Flyers connected on its closing free throw attempts to finish its national championship run.

Mohawk Valley's Jordanny Cuevas-Marte poured in 21 points to earn a spot on the all-tournament team, joined by fellow teammate Adonis Fishburne who scored 23 in Friday's bout.

The Hawks finish the season #2 in the country with a 30-3 record.
