Softball Takes Two from  Broome CC in Season Opener

 

The Mohawk Valley Community College softball team broke out for 23 combined runs in its doubleheader sweep of the Broome Community College Hornets on Monday afternoon. In what was the team's season opener, the Hawks downed the Mustangs 11-1 in game one (6 Inn.) and 12-6 in game two (7 Inn.).  

Game 1: MVCC 11, Broome 1
Five Hawks recorded hits in the win over Broome CC. Carley Robinson (Whitesboro, NY) (1-3, 1 run1, 1 RBI, 1 walk), Mackenzie Emmons (Binghamton, NY) (1 homerun, 1 walk,  2 RBI), Joely Welpe (Utica, NY) (1 double, 1 walk, 2 runs, 2 RBI), Faith Hicks (Vestel, NY) (1 double, 1 walk, 1 RBI, 1 run), and Sarah Zuchowski (Poland, NY) (1 double, 1 run).  

Angelina Hays (Oriskany, NY) earned her first regular season win of the year as she went five innings in the circle allowing no runs, two hits and no walks. She also struck out nine Hornets. Kendall Darling (Sandy Creek, NY) tossed the final inning and gave up one run, one earned, on two hits and no walks. 

Game 2: MVCC 12, Broome 6

As a team, the Hawks combined for 12 runs on 10 hits and 3 walks. Mackenzie Emmons (Binghamton, NY) notched two hits, scoring twice and driving in another two runs. Joely Welpe (Utica, NY) went 2 for 3 with a double, driving in 4 runs and scoring 1. Kylei Cavelino (Liverpool, NY) had two hits and 2 runs.  

In the circle, freshman Jenna Riesel (Herkimer, NY) earned her first regular season win allowing 9 hits, 6 runs, 5 earned, and zero strike walks. She struck out 8 Hornets. Angelina Hays (Oriskany, NY) secured the win for the Hawks. She closed the game in the final inning allowing zero runs to score.
