Emmons and Hicks Go Yard, Hawks Take Two From the Panthers

The MVCC softball team captured its fifth and sixth consecutive wins with a doubleheader sweep of Tompkins-Cortland CC on Tuesday. The Hawks topped the Panthers 14-3 in game one before winning game two, 7-5.

 Game 1: MVCC 14, TC3 3

Sophomore, Mackenzie Emmons (Binghamton, NY), went yard for the second time this season with a 220 foot 2-run dinger over the left field fence. Mackenzie went 1-for-2 with one run and 2 RBI. Joely Welpe (Utica, NY) extended her hitting streak as the sophomore went 2-for-3 with one run and one walk. Freshman, Ashley Fevang (East Islip, NY), stepped up to the plate after being subbed into the game in the fourth inning ultimately going 3-for-3 with one double, scoring 3 runs and driving another 3 runs in.  Freshman center fielder, Paige Cook (Saratoga, NY) also made a major impact on the game going 3-for-3, scoring 3 runs and had 3 RBI.

 In the circle, Angelina Hays (Oriskany, NY) held it down, allowing 3 runs, striking out 7 and allowing only 1 walk.

 Game 2: MVCC 7, TC3 5

 Mackenize Emmons (Binghamton, NY) was the lone Hawk to finish with a multi-hit performance as the sophomore went 2-for3 with a run scored and 1 RBI. Faith Hicks (Vestal, NY) picked up her first homerun of the season, another 220 ft bomb over the left field fence. Faith went 1-for 3 with 1 run and 2 RBI. Angelina Hays (Oriskany, NY), Joely Welpe (Utica, NY), Kylei Cavelino (Liverpool, NY), Ashley Fevang (East Islip, NY), and Paige Cook (Saratoga, NY) all contributed one hit each to help seal the victory.

 On the mound, freshman Jenna Riesel (Herkimer, NY) tossed a good game en route to her second victory of the season. The freshman gave up four runs off seven hits. Angelina Hays (Oriskany, NY) closed the game giving the Hawks their last two outs in the top of the seventh.
