Women's Tennis opens up with win over Hudson Valley
The Mohawk Valley Women's Tennis team started their 2025 season with a win over visiting Hudson Valley 8-1. The snow and wind forced the match to be moved to the Jorgensen Center Fieldhouse, but the Hawks and Vikings were able to complete their matches. Starting with doubles play, the Hawks swept the Pro 8 set winning all 3 matches. Rebecca Huynh and Sha Wee won 1st doubles 8-5, Lotte Van Heeswijk and Philymena DiKar won 2nd doubles 8-1, and the sister combo of Tessie and Marlee Shafer won the 3rd flight by a score of 8-1. The match them flipped over to singles play where Mohawk Valley would win five out of the six singles matches only dropping the 1st singles match to Hudson Valley's Jocelyn Richter. Van Heeswijk, Dikar, Wee, freshman Morgan Kirkland, and Tessie Shafer were all victorious in their singles matches.
"This is a solid team top to bottom, interchangeable line-ups and the ability to see girls playing in different flights and against different opponents each match. I look forward to seeing how far this team can go this season because they are very fun to watch," said Coach Nick Evanoff. The Hawks will return to action at a time to be determined as they will host Herkimer, the match originally scheduled for Thursday, April 10th had to be postponed due to weather and fieldhouse availability.
