Utica, NY — September 2, 2025
The top-ranked Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC) men's soccer team wasted no time making a statement to open their 2025 season, rolling to a commanding 7-1 victory over SUNY Adirondack on Tuesday afternoon.
The Hawks struck early and often, putting together a dominant first-half performance that featured five goals in a 17-minute span. Sophomore forward Giorgos Spyrou opened the scoring in the 10th minute (9:45) when he buried a cross from Davi Moretzohn to give MVCC the early lead.
Just minutes later, Spyrou was involved again—this time linking up with Theo Muniz, who finished a quick 1-2 combination in the box for a 2-0 advantage at the 12:15 mark. MVCC's attack continued to overwhelm Adirondack's back line, as Moretzohn got on the scoresheet himself in the 17th minute, finishing a well-placed pass from Mario Camacho.
The offensive fireworks continued with Jorge Angeles scoring on a breakaway after receiving a pinpoint through ball from Andre Spinola in the 22nd minute (21:42). Just five minutes later, Alejandro Lima made it 5-0, finishing a setup from Dinis Pires in the 27th minute (26:55).
After halftime, the Hawks didn't let off the gas. In the 54th minute (53:09), Dinis Pires got a goal of his own, converting a pass from Javier Monesinos Da Torre. The scoring was capped in the 84th minute (83:20) when Kaue Caires netted an unassisted goal with a strong individual effort.
Goalkeepers Tijn Laanen and Leo Eldson combined for two saves for the Hawks.
With the win, the Hawks start their campaign at 1-0 and will be back in action on Wednesday at 7 p.m., hosting Cayuga Community College in a rematch of last season's Region III "A" Championship Game.
