MVCC Women Grind Out a 63–57 Win Over North Country
Utica, NY — The Mohawk Valley Community College women's basketball team secured a hard-fought 63–57 victory over North Country on Wednesday night. Powered by sophomore forward Shayla Baker's monster 21-point, 20-rebound performance.
North Country came out of the gate aggressive, jumping to a 15–9 lead after the first quarter but Mohawk Valley responded with poise. The Hawks flipped the game in the second quarter by tightening their defense and establishing Baker as a dominant interior presence. Her relentless effort on the glass — including 7 offensive rebounds — generated extra possessions that turned into momentum-shifting points. The Hawks outscored North Country 17–11 in the period, heading into halftime tied at 26–26.
The third quarter showcased MVCC's growing confidence. Tiara Smith, who logged a full 40 minutes, steadied the offense with 6 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists, while Leniyah Leslie and Takyla Vaughn provided balance with timely drives and defensive pressure. The Hawks' defensive rotations sharpened, holding North Country to just 12 third-quarter points as MVCC took a five-point lead entering the final frame.
The Hawks' bench played a vital supporting role, delivering critical minutes in tight stretches. Bailey Wegrzynowski provided an efficient spark with 9 points on 3-for-4 shooting from deep, while Felise Fowler chipped in 6 points and helped steady MVCC's perimeter defense. Jazmine Brown added 8 points and crucial energy inside.
The Hawks move to 3-1 on the season and add another tally to their 3 game win streak. The Hawks return to action when they host Finger Lakes Community College on Saturday, November 15th at 2:00PM.
