#6 Hawks Defeat #7 Genesee, 84-77

The #6 Hawks traveled to Batavia for a 1:00 PM game against #7 Genesee Cougars. In the battle of nationally ranked opponents, there were heavy blows thrown by both teams early on. The Hawks defense prevailed in the first half, holding the Cougars to just 32 points and going into the half with a 14 point lead, 46-32.

As the game went on, the Hawks began to get out in the open court as well as attack the offensive glass. Ike Sheppard was the catalyst as he pulled in 14 rebounds, in addition to 18 big points.

Travis Gray continued his stellar play dropping 19 points, dishing out 6 assists and pulling in 6 rebounds on the afternoon while handling high level full court pressure for 40 minutes from a pesky Cougar team.

Daniel Barrera and Jamir Smith combined for 29 impressive points on transition drives as well as catch and shoot threes against the Genesee zone defense late in the second half.

Additionally Asa Beyah was impressive defensively, as well as in making some difficult shots around the rim to help close out the game, finishing with 11 points and 5 rebounds.

The Hawks held a 20 point lead for much of the second half and were able to hold off a late Genesee run that saw the lead get cut to 7 multiple times with deep threes being made by many Cougar players.

The Hawks ultimately closed out the game with an 84-77 win over the Genesee to improved their record to 20-2 and win their 14th straight game.

"Winning games in February and March, especially on the road, are all about mental, physical and emotional toughness. We showed all of those characteristics this weekend and we need to continue on with that trend. We are in pursuit of being the best team that we can be every day, moving forward together and continuing to get better every time we step on that floor. " - Coach Harley Fuller said after the win on Sunday night.
