Hawks Fall in NJCAA Elite 8, to #1 Sandhills, 92-86

The Mohawk Valley Men's Basketball team entered the NJCAA National Tournament as a #9 seed and took on #8 seed Prince Georges Community College in round 1 of the NJCAA tournament at the host site, Herkimer College. The Hawks battled and led by as many as 25 early in the second half. However, PG battled back and cut the lead to 5 late in the second half but the Hawks held strong and earned the victory and a berth in the Elite 8 on Thursday afternoon.

On Thursday, the Hawks took on #1 overall seed Sandhills Community College in a 2:00 PM game with a trip to the Final Four on the line. Mohawk Valley gave the flyers all they could handle throughout the first half and took a 33-32 lead into the half against a very talented Sandhills team.

As the half went on, the Hawks and Flyers exhanged blows, both fighting to advance in the tournament and keep their National Championship hopes alive.

Ultimately, the Flyers hit some difficult shots late and were able to gain the seperation needed to take down the Hawks and end their season in the Elite 8 of the National tournament.

Jordan Drain led the way with 18 points, Travis Gray had 17 points, Asa Beyah had 12 points, Zay Knight had 12 points, and Lateef Johnson rounded out the double digit scoring for the Hawks with 11 points.

The Hawks also received important contributions from Ike Sheppard on both ends of the floor, even through foul trouble, as well as Daniel Barrera and Dwayne Young throughout the game.

"I couldn't be more proud of this group and how they left everything out there on the floor this week. In a 2 point game, with 2 minutes left, there's a very thin line of winning and losing. We had ourselves in position to have a chance to win the game, and that's all you hope for as a coach. Our guys "fought", scrapped, competed and pushed each other all game long and because of that I think our group walked away with peace of mind knowing that we did all we could to win that game. This team has been so special to coach, all year long they have worked and been focused on chasing a national championship. We came up short, but what they were able to do is something that I will and I know they will, remember the rest of their lives." -Coach Harley Fuller said following the loss.
