Hawks dominate puck control for first victory

It took a couple games for the MVCC ice hockey to warm up, but when the Hawks took flight against the SUNY Oneonta Hockey Club they set the ice on fire en route to a 10-4 victory.

The Hawks (1-4) fell behind early as Oneonta scored back-to-back goals, but forward Matt Thompson broke the ice with a goal off a pass from Jake Bialek. MVCC tied the game on Kevin Thompson's unassisted goal and then took the lead on Thompson's unassisted power-play goal late in the first period.

Oneonta briefly tied the game on a power-play goal early in the second period, but this was short-lived as John Rhoades scored an unassisted goal, followed by two goals from Michael Rich. The first goal was assisted by Brandon Carter.

Again, Oneonta opened the third period with a goal only to have the Hawks fly back with four unanswered goals. The first was by Rhoades off a pass from Ryan Rielley as the second was an unassisted power-play goal by Nick Hall. Yah Grciano and Rielley both had unassisted goals to put the lid on the victory.

Between the pipes for the Hawks were Anderson Gonzalez and Marcus Fortin. Gonzalez made six saves while Fortin stopped 19 shots.
