Hawks Drop a Pair of Games on the Weekend

The Mohawk Valley Men's Lacrosse team lost to Tompkins-Cortland on the road Friday evening before returning home to host the #4 Genesee Cougars on Sunday afternoon where Genesee would be victorious in that game as well.  On Friday, the Hawks played their best all-around game of the season and just came up on the short end.  Sophomore captain Derek Ferrone scooped up a career-high 11 groundballs and scored a goal as well.  He was crucial in the midfield and transition game for the Hawks as he has been throughout his career.  Sophomore Max Hunt scored the other two Mohawk Valley goals on assists from fellow Rome Free Academy teammate Dominick Gratch.  Sophomore Jacob White stopped 15 of the 27 shots he faced, but the Hawks didn't capitalize on opportunities.  "I saw some very good things tonight.  Unfortunately, we hit the post seven times and were stopped point blank on a few opportunities too.  If a couple of those go in, that swings the momentum in our favor and it is a tight game.  It hurts, but there were a lot of positives that came out of that game." said Coach Evanoff.

The Hawks had to turn around and host #4 Genesee Sunday afternoon at D'Alessandro Stadium and the Cougars would defeat Mohawk Valley by a score of 32-1.  Jacob White stopped 12 shots on the afternoon seeing the most shots he has seen all season.  The lone Mohawk Valley goal was scored by Max Hunt right before halftime on a beautiful feed inside from Derek Ferrone.  The Hawks had limited opportunities as the Cougars controlled the face-off X all day, but had a few good looks, and a couple nice saves from Genesee's goalies held Mohawk Valley to just the one goal.

"We have definitely played some quality opponents this year that helps test us for the stretch run of the season which has four games in eight days to wrap up the season.  Luckily, we have a week to heal up and tighten up some stuff before our next game," said Evanoff.

Mohawk Valley will host Finger Lakes CC on Wednesday, April 9th at 5:30pm at D'Alessandro Stadium with both teams searching for their first win of the season.  The game will be livestreamed through Hudl.
