#6 Hawks open up the season with win at Onondaga

The Nationally ranked #6 Mohawk Valley Men's Soccer team opened up the Fall 2022 season with a 2-1 overtime victory over Onondaga Community College. The Lazers struck first in the 60th minute when Caio Hughes played a ball to Adam Webster in behind the Hawk defense to give OCC a 1-0 lead. The Hawks notched their first tally of the game in the 67th minute when Marlon Armenta found Marco Paolo Saavedra, who finished the breakaway attempt to even the score.

The Hawks continued to create multiple chances but Lazer goalkeeper Ryan Lyle stayed solid to push the game into overtime. After a scoreless first overtime, Jhonny Theze found Alvaro Pineda who put home the game winner with 5 minutes remaining in double OT. Hawks goalkeeper Jamie Toft would finish the game with 4 saves while Ryan Lyle would finish the game with 6 saves.

"Today was a great road test to start the season. I thought OCC's goalkeeper came up with multiple big saves to keep things very close. We were glad to see the guys battle through the adversity of going down 1-0 on the road but continued to remain calm and play our game." - Dominic Dimaggio, MVCC Men's Soccer Head Coach.

The #6 Hawks return to action on Wednesday 9/7 at 7:00pm when they take on visiting Clinton Community College at D'Alessandro Stadium in Utica, NY.
