#5 Mohawk Valley Topples #3 Herkimer 4-1

Wednesday evening was a national showdown in NJCAA Men's Soccer between two national powerhouses. The Hawks struck first in the 29th minute when Lucas Beja would find Paolo Saavedra in the box who blasted home the first-time finish to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. The Generals would draw even in the second half when Mohmed Mohamed crossed a ball to Shuntaro Morimoto who found the back of the net. The Hawks would regain the lead when Lucas Beja took a touch off a corner kick and performed an overhead kick which beat the Herkimer goalkeeper to put the Hawks up 2-1 with 26 minutes left in the game. The Hawks would add another when Andrew Chmukh got on the end of a bouncing ball in the box off a corner kick to put the Hawks up 3-1. Alonso Fernandez Guirao would find Lucas Beja who beat a defender and blasted it past the Herkimer goalkeeper to give the Hawks a 4-1 lead with roughly 15 minutes remaining in the 2nd half. Hawks goalkeeper Jaime Mata would finish the game with 2 saves in the win while his counterpart Cathal Carney would finish the game with 4 saves. The Hawks would hold a 15-10 advantage in shots with an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Hawks held a 7-5 advantage on corner kicks.

"Tonight was a great team effort" stated Head Coach Dominic DiMaggio. "I thought we did well as a group, finished well in front of goal, and turned some half chances into goals. We did great in the first half creating opportunities and dictating the game. I thought Herkimer came out in the second half and had the better of the play for the first fifteen minutes until we regained control. I'm proud of the guys effort tonight especially without two of our top three scorers but still managed to score 4 goals. We were able to lock up the Mountain Valley Conference regular season championship and put us in a great position to win the Region III regular season and lock up the #1 seed heading into playoffs."

The Hawks 11-0-2 now hold the #1 seed in Region III while the Generals 7-2 now hold the #3 seed. The Hawks have their final regular season of the year on Wednesday, October 18th when they host North Country Community College at D'Alessandro Stadium for a 7:00PM kickoff.
