#1 seeded Hawks take down #8 seeded Lakers

The MVCC Men's Soccer team won their opening round of the Region III tournament by a score of 2-1 over Finger Lakes Community College. The Hawks got on the board just 5 minutes into the match when Alieu Barrie stepped up and finished a penalty kick opportunity. The Hawks would head into halftime with a 1-0 lead. With 20 minutes remaining, the Lakers received a penalty kick and finished the opportunity to tie the game 1-1. With 15 minutes left in the game, Lucas Beja would find Marco Paolo Saavedra for the first-time finish to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead.

"I thought we created many chances tonight but didn't finish in front of goal." stated Head Coach Dom DiMaggio. "Finger Lakes did a good job sticking to their tactics and making things difficult on us. Tonight was an opportunity for us to learn a lesson as a group without it costing us our season."

The Hawks will move on to the NJCAA Region III Bracket A Championship game where they will take on #4 seeded Onondaga Community College Lazers. The Hawks and Lazers played earlier this season and the Hawks earned a 2-1 victory. The game will be played at Herkimer Community College with either a 1:00PM or 3:30PM kickoff. #2 seeded Genesee Community College will take on #3 seeded Herkimer College in the Bracket B Championship game. The winner of each championship game will punch their ticket to Gastonia, North Carolina where the final 8 teams in the country will meet for a chance to be crowned NJCAA Division III National Champions.
