Hawks Men’s Soccer advances to National Championship

The MVCC Men's Soccer team will be competing for a National Championship after beating Nassau Community College by a score of 2-1 in the National semi-final. Nassau would strike first just less than 5 minutes into the game. Lorenzo Cali would cross a ball to Marco Russo who deflected the ball into the side of the goal. The Lions would go into halftime with a 1-0 lead, handing the Hawks their first halftime deficit of the season. In the 76th minute, Gustavo Nunes beat a defender and the Nassau goalkeeper came out to deny the breakaway attempt but fouled Nunes, awarding a penalty kick for the Hawks. Andrew Chmukh would step up and burry the opportunity home to level the game 1-1. With four minutes remaining, Ismail Borow would send in a cross that Gustavo Nunes volleyed home the 1st time attempt to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead. The Hawks were able to keep the Lions off the board and secure a trip to the National Championship. MVCC goalkeeper Jaime Mata would make 1 save in goal for the win while his counterpart Kenny Chamo would finish the game with 4 saves. The Hawks outshot the Lions 17-8 with a 6-2 advantage on goal. MVCC also held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.

"I'm proud of the guys for their effort tonight." stated Head Coach Dom DiMaggio. "We gave up an early goal which allowed Nassau to try to absorb some of our pressure and hope to hang on to the lead. I thought we did a great job creating good chances and we were able to wear them down in our possession. We never allowed them to get into a good rhythm of the game after they scored. We made a few tactical changes in the second half and guys responded extremely well to going down a goal. Tonight showed character."
