
The #8 Nationally ranked Mohawk Valley Community College Men's Soccer team faced off with the #2 Nationally ranked Herkimer College Generals on Wednesday evening. The Hawks struck first just 4 minutes into the match when Gustavo Nunes flicked Santiago Molina in on a breakaway. Molina slotted the ball past the General goalkeeper to put the Hawks up 1-0. Just 15 minutes later, Molina found Nunes in the box who beat the General defender and fired a shot hard and low into the back of the net to put the Hawks up 2-0. The Generals would respond when they would get behind the MVCC defenders and fired a shot low off the post and in the back of the net to cut the lead to 2-1 heading into halftime.
With roughly 18 minutes remaining in the game, the Generals were awarded a penalty kick to tie the game 2-2. With 7 minutes remaining, Santiago Molina would find Gustavo Nunes in the box. Nunes fired a shot off the post, collected his rebound, and slotted it in the back of the net to give the Hawks a 3-2 lead. The Hawks would close the game out to earn a 3-2 win. Jaime Mata had 3 saves in goal for the Hawks.
"Tonight was a great game between two strong teams" stated Head Coach Dominic DiMaggio. "We've had some unfortunate results this year and faced some tough adversity. It's never easy to concede two penalty kicks and still find a way to win. We hope to be fully healthy for the Regional Tournament and continue to build momentum off tonight's win."
With the win, the Hawks jump to 9-2-3 while they Generals drop to 9-1 on the season. The Hawks enter the NJCAA Region III Tournament which are the initial rounds of the NJCAA Division III National Tournament. The Hawks will host Genesee Community College at SUNY Poly on Wednesday 10/23 at 12:00PM. Genesee beat the Hawks earlier this season 3-1 in Batavia.
