Hawks take down Cougars in NJCAA Region III A Semi-Final

The MVCC Men's Soccer team faced a tough draw with Genesee Community College in the NJCAA Region III A Semi-Final match. MVCC entered as the #4 seed with a record of 9-2-3 while the Cougars entered the game as the #5 seed with a record of 10-5. The Cougars got on the board first just 15 minutes into the game when a Genesee player crossed the ball that hit off the MVCC defender and into the back of the net to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. In the 35th minute, MVCC was awarded a penalty kick after David Kamara was pulled down in the box on a free kick. Santiago Molina stepped up and put home the attempt to tie the game 1-1. In the second half, both teams created opportunities, but neither were able to beat the oppositions goalkeepers. After 90 minutes, the game was heading into two 10-minute golden goal periods, if there was no game winner, the game would be decided in penalty kicks.

With roughly 4 minutes remaining in the first overtime period, Santiago Molina would serve a corner kick into the box. The ball would bounce back out to Tony Gjomemo who played Molina in the corner. Molina would serve the ball into the box and Daniel Beltran would head home the opportunity to win the game for the Hawks.

"It's always a great battle when we play Genesee" stated Head Coach Dominic DiMaggio. "We created too many high-quality chances tonight to not advance. The guys were able to gut this one out."

The Hawks advance to the NJCAA Region III A Championship game when they take on the #1 seeded Cayuga Spartans on Sunday, October 27th at Herkimer College. Kickoff will be at 3:30PM. The Spartans beat the #8 seeded Jamestown Jayhawks 4-3 in thriller on Wednesday evening. #2 seeded Herkimer College will take on #3 seeded Finger Lakes College at 1:00PM prior to the contest. The winning two teams will head into the NJCAA National Championships which consists of the final 8 teams in the country, battling it out for a National Championship.
