
The #3 seeded Mohawk Valley Community College Men's Soccer team took on #6 seeded Northern Essex Community College on Tuesday evening in the NJCAA Division III Men's Soccer National Quarterfinals. It took the Hawks just 9 minutes to score their first goal of the game when Gustavo Nunes picked up a loose ball off a corner kick and laid it off to Tony Gjomemo. Gjomemo took a shot that deflected off a Northern Essex defender and found the back of the net to put the Hawks up 1-0. In the 19th minute, Souayibou Diop found Jorge Angeles who drove down the width of the box and fired a shot past the Northern Essex goalkeeper to put the Hawks up 2-0. In the 25th minute, Santiago Molina and Jorge Angeles would combine multiple times and Molina would fire a shot into the bottom corner of the goal to put the Hawks up 3-0. Northern Essex was awarded a penalty kick in the 30th minute and Jadiel Bomfim stepped up and put the attempt home to make it a 3-1 game. Just 2 minutes later, Santiago Molina would serve a free kick into the box that found Souayibou Diop who slotted the ball into the bottom corner of the net to put the Hawks up 4-1. The Hawks would enter the locker room at halftime up 4-1. Jaime Mata and the Hawks defense were solid all night and didn't allow any goals in the second half to give the Hawks a 4-1 win. Jaime Mata would finish the game with 3 saves while his counterpart Will Paganini would finish the game with 6 saves. The Hawks move to 12-2-3 while the Knights fall to 14-3 to close out their season.
The Hawks advance to the National Semi-Finals where they will take on #2 seeded Nassau Community College in a rematch of last year's National Semi-Finals. Last year, the Hawks advanced to the National Championship game after a 2-1 win over Nassau. The game will take place at Genesee Community College on Friday, November 15th at 1:30PM.
