Hawks Softball Splits with Generals

UTICA, NY - The Mohawk Valley Community College softball team clashed with the Herkimer Generals on Monday evening. The Hawks claimed game one with a 6-4 win before losing the second game in five innings, 12-4. 

 Paige Cook (Saratoga, NY), put the Hawks ahead 4-0 with a grand slam in the second inning of the game extending her hitting streak to seven. Angelina Hays (Oriskany, NY) extended the lead in the fifth inning with a two-run shot over the center field fence. Hays went 2-for2 with 2 runs, 2 walks and 2 RBI. Mackenzie Emmons (Binghamton, NY) and Kylei Cavelino (Liverpool, NY) had MVCC's other two hits in the game while Joely Welpe (Utica, NY) and Sarah Zuchowski (Poland, NY) each had two walks. Going into the top of the seventh inning the Hawks led 6-1. Herkimer's number six hitter led off the inning with a double. After walking the next batter the Hawks lost focus fumbling the next two grounders. Herkimer scored 3 runs in the top of the seventh before the Hawks refocused and shut them down to win the game 6-4.

Game 2: MVCC 4, Herkimer 12

The Hawks came out strong in game 2, going up 1-0 off a solo homerun by freshman center fielder Paige Cook (Saratoga, NY). Ashley Fevang (East Islip, NY) continued the first inning hitting streak with a double to deep left field. The next three innings the Hawks remain scoreless despite stringing together 3 back-to-back singles in the second inning by Kylei Cavelino (Liverpool, NY), Sarah Zuchowski (Poland, NY) and Faith Hicks (Vestal, NY). The Hawks went down 8-1 by the fourth inning before Mackenzie Emmons (Binghamton, NY) rocked a 3-run homerun to centerfield making the score 8-4. Carley Robinson (Whitesboro, NY) went 2-for-3 with one run. The Hawks couldn't recover the momentum after three defensive errors. The Hawks ended their 9-game winning streak with a score of 12-4.

Angelina Hays (Oriskany, NY) got the start on the mound again for the Hawks. Hays came out strong, holding off the Generals the first two innings of the game. Herkimer's bats came alive in the third inning when they scored three runs off three hits. Hays allowed 7 earned runs out of 8 scored off 8 hits. Jenna Riesel (Herkimer, NY) finished the fifth inning for the Hawks allowing 4 runs off 4 hits for the final score of 12 to 4.

 The Hawks continue on the road to face Jefferson Community College on Thursday, April 18th at 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM.
