Hawks conquer Spartans, 67-47

Hawks conquer Spartans, 67-47

Mohawk Valley's woman's basketball team traveled to Cayuga College on Sunday afternoon, for a highly anticipated battle against a talented Spartans team.

In the opening quarter, Coffey's Hawks came out firing. The first quarter saw MV take a 21-11 lead over the home team, by utilizing pressure defense and pushing the ball in the open floor to get easy baskets. Turnovers caused by the Hawks were also a key early on, but the second quarter was a different story as the Spartans swung back.

The second quarter saw Cayuga cut the Hawks lead to 5 with some long range shooting and ball security, which took the two teams into the locker room with a halftime score of 32-27, Hawks.

Coming out in the 3rd quarter, the Hawks and Spartans were in a back and forth battle. At this point, Mackenzie Hess began to take over the game for the Hawks. A pair of three pointers by Hess gave the Hawks some more breathing room, but it was evident that the Spartans were going to give everything they had. However, going into the 4th quarter the Hawks held a narrow 9 point lead, but that is when they turned up their pressure once again.

The 4th quarter saw the Hawks hold the Spartans to just 6 points, which proved to be the difference maker as they were able to close out the quarter with 17 points. The Hawks ultimately were victories by a final score of 67-47. A season high 20 points by Mackenzie Hess on 4/9 from the 3 point line was a major key in the Hawks victory. Furthermore, double doubles by Raegan Dalrymple (18 points, 10 rebounds) and Nataya McGee (17 points, 11 rebounds) set the tone in the paint for the Hawks.

The victory brings the Hawks to an impressive 8-2 record on the season. They will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Adirondack Community College for 1:00 PM matchup against the Timberwolves.
