Saturday, December 7th vs. Broome Community College
The Mohawk Valley Women's Basketball team had two home games this weekend. On Saturday, the Hawks took on Broome Community College in the 1st of the two game home stand, as they looked to finish out the semester strong.
In the opening minutes Saturday, the Hawks defended with a great deal of urgency and limited high percentage opportunities for the Hornets. Nataya McGee was the catalyst early on for the much of the Hawks scoring as she knocked down open jump shots and attacked the rim with physicality. Her 8 first quarter points led the way for the green and white and as a result the Hawks were able to create some seperation early on.
In the second quarter, a Zanii Mayo 3 got things started for the Hawks as they looked to expand on their lead. Midway through the second quarter Freshman Wing Shayla Baker started to put her mark on the game on the offensive end. A quick 8 points from her gave the Hawks some breathing room. The story of the 1st half was the Hawks putting together an extremely impressive 1st half performance, holding the Hornets to only 5 points on 2 field goals as they headed into the locker room.
In the second half it was more of the same for the Hawks, as they shared the ball, defended with urgency and were able to defensively make it difficult for the Hornets to get anything going. Ultimately the Hawks were able to defeat the Hornets by a final score of 64-26.
Shayla Baker had 14 in the second half alone, which gave her a game high 22 points for the Hawks. Nataya McGee added an efficient 13 points, and Zanii Mayo added 10 points to round out the double digit scoring for Mohawk Valley.
Sunday, December 8th vs. Tompkins Cortland Community College
After a great performance on Saturday, the Hawks looked to make it a 2-0 weekend as the Panthers of Tompkins Cortland came into town for a 4:00 PM matchup. Although two games in two days can be difficult from a physical standpoint, Nataya McGee showed from the opening tip that it had no impact on her. As the Hawks pushed the ball in transition, it was McGee who made a big impact in the opening half as she was able to drop in 12 first half points.
The duo Freshman Guard Felise Fowler, and Jani Washington also proved to be important for the green and white in the first 20 minutes of play. Felise netted 8 points on 2 threes and a layup, and Jani Washington added 8 to give the Hawks a lead heading into the half.
The second half was dominated by the Hawks defense, and high level ball movement and they ultimately went on to defeat the Panthers by a final score of 65-50. Nataya McGee finished with 21 points on Sunday afternoon to lead the way for the surging Hawks. Jani Washington and Felise Fowler both contributed 11 points a piece to round out the double figure scoring for the Hawks.
The Hawks will be back in action after the holidays on January 10th as they will take on Erie Community College on January 10th.
