Mohawk Valley Women's Soccer Moves On To National Semifinals!

Mohawk Valley Women's Soccer Moves On To National Semifinals!

Mohawk Valley and Onondaga Women's Soccer met earlier this season on the turf in Syracuse. In that match, through 70 minutes of action, the Hawks and Lazers remained deadlocked in a 0-0 tie, until late in the match when the two talented teams combined for 3 late goals. Ultimately the Hawks were able to secure that early season victory by a final score of 2-1.

On Wednesday evening, The Hawks and Lazers would again meet in a National Quarterfinal matchup that was destined to be a show for everyone in attendance.

Just one minute into the game, the Hawks struck first when Jenna Johnson found the back of the net off of a pass from Isabella Kleban. That goal gave the Hawks some early momentum. However, the Lazers continued to compete and their effort was rewarded just 9 minutes later, as they evened the game up with a goal in the 11th minute of action.

Possession traded back and forth for the next 23 minutes of action, until the Hawks Jenna Johnson continued having a match for the ages, as she found the back of the net once again for Mohawk in the 34th minute of play. Johnsons goal, which was assisted by Krista Panko, gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead.

As the game continued on, the Hawks created a few more opportunities, however it was the Lazers who were able to capitalize on a created opportunity of their own. In the 41st minute, the Lazers again evened up the game at 2-2 just before the halftime horn sounded.

Both teams strategized at halftime and prepared for what was sure to be a high energy second half, with a trip to the national semi-finals on the line.

Through the next 45 minutes of play, both teams strategically played possession, ensuring that no mistakes were made and no easy opportunities were presented. Ultimately, the second half of play ended with the score still deadlocked at 2-2.

The stakes remained high, and so did the defensive focus through both teams through both overtime periods which ultimately led to penalty kicks between the Hawks and lazers.

It was ultimately the Hawks who were able to prevail in Penalty Kicks with an epic victory for Coach Vitale and his team, which punched their ticket to the national semifinals to take on Dallas College Brookhaven at 6:30 PM, on Friday, with a trip to the National Championship game on the line.
